Our 2009 Trip and Some History!
What began 22 years ago as a one-time, nine member mission trip to Belize, Central America has evolved into a permanent commitment to the people there. Under the leadership of Dr. Joe Lindsay and Dr. Mike Guevara, Dos Amigos has been meeting the dental and medical needs over Easter week for two decades. Thousands of people in remote Kekchi villages who lack the access or funds to seek treatment have been treated by the Dos Amigos members. With a steady core of dedicated team members, Dos Amigos welcomes not only dental and medical professionals, but people from a variety of backgrounds to serve–from teenagers to school principles, auditors to graphic designers.
After a challenging process of securing funds and acquiring land 10 years ago, permits, and arranging construction in another country, this year’s mission team was blessed to be the first to stay in the Clinic. Dental, Medical and optometry services were provided in the new Dos Amigos Clinic which is located about 10 Miles west of Punta Gorda.
This year we were blessed with a team of volunteers from Baton Rouge, LA, Ohio and California who prepared the clinic for our arrival on the Thursday before Easter. They had gone down a week prior to our arrival to paint and fix up our quarters on the second floor.
This years team consisted of 3 dentists, an ER physician, a dermatologist, an optometrist, 5 nurses and 13 hard working people who helped make the clinic a success.
Treating over 1200 persons, we feel so blessed that we had such a successful trip. God has richly blessed Dos Amigos and continues to open doors for us to serve His people in Belize. It is hoped that with the clinic available, more teams can return throughout the year to provide even more help to the Belize people, especially the Kekchi Indians.
